2025

The collection of photographs we create together will become a treasured family heirloom.

Congratulations on your recent engagement! I’m so honored that you’re considering me as your photographer. Wedding photography is a lot of things, but most of all it’s an investment in someone to preserve the feeling of your wedding day.

Each wedding I photograph allows me to be accepted into another dynamically unique family. I show up not only for the basics - like exchanging vows or sharing your first dance - but for the moments in between. Little things - like the flock of birds that passes by while your best friend adjusts your veil - are just as important as the tiny details in your table arrangements and the impromptu group hug with your extended family. Every guest is there for a reason, so let’s photograph them.

My work is all about producing stunning, journalistic, and genuine photographs that bring out the beauty in every celebration. It’s the second best thing to having your own time machine.

about me

MCKENZIE ELIZABETH

I live with my partner Matt and our two children, five-year-old Tom and baby Peter, just outside Baltimore in a 1940s-era home. We lovingly restored it ourselves, keeping as many historic details as possible. Bringing painted-over brass hardware and carpet-covered hardwood back to life was so rewarding!

We met through our mutual love for art ten years ago. Matt is a painter and, at the time, I was an illustrator painting whimsical scenes of childhood. Our life is a happy one, full of art, and DIY renovation projects. We both love landscape design and perennial gardening, and much of our family time is spent digging and planting in the yard.

Before we met, I had a small farmstead raising sheep, chickens, bees, and vegetables. I also worked at a small Montessori school where part of my job description was journalistically photographing toddlers in the classroom and on the playground. It was there I learned to be a fly on the wall, sensitive to the emotions in a room, and especially able to anticipate meaningful interactions. I decided to start photographing families with my own camera and shortly after, photographed a friend’s wedding.

The adrenaline of so many human moments in one short day was invigorating and I’ve never looked back. This work allows me to connect with people in a way that makes them feel seen for who they really are. At its core, this is heart work. It’s history in the making. I’m no longer just a fly on the wall, but a guest at your wedding and part of your family for the day.

After I had my first child, I started using film to document the way family life felt. I never imagined incorporating it into weddings until I realized what a nostalgic, perfectly imperfect feeling it added to a collection of images. It feels like my calling and I’ve never been more in love with a medium. It stands the test of time and will never go out of style.

You want this special day in your lives documented with attention to detail and emotion. I make it simple, keep it fun, and focus on the sincere moments that naturally occur between two people who are madly in love and everyone you’ve chosen to celebrate with. I’ll photograph things you never even knew happened while you were dancing the night away. Years from now, I want you to look at your photographs and fall in love with the story they share all over again.

I make it simple, keep it light, & focus on the candid moments.

Your wedding isn’t a social media photo op.

We’re not getting “content.”

We’re documenting your family’s history.

why film?

Digital cameras are amazing. They absolutely have a place in my workflow and I love that they come with limitless experimentation and unprecedented capability in low-light scenarios. They’re safe. Each camera has two card slots and each image is duplicated the millisecond it’s created. They’re also too perfect and too predictable to create the art I want to share with my couples.

After I started photographing my own family with film, I realized how thrilling creative restraint can be. I love that each frame is truly precious, in part because it’s a physical object. There’s an actual chemical reaction when light hits the film. These are the photographs I treasure most. They convey feeling in a way digital just can’t replicate.

I typically bring at least five film cameras to each wedding, each with their own personality. Currently the “team” includes: a light-leaky 35mm Canon AE1, a perfectionist medium format Pentax 645, a 1960s Yashica with a waist-level viewfinder, and an ever-reliable 2000s-era 35mm with a manual flash. (I once dabbled in point and shoots but they left me disappointed.) I often find that seeing these relics from the past is enough for even the most photo-averse family members to let their guard down. Film is nostalgic and comforting.

do you really include a print album with every collection?

yes, and you can see some real wedding albums here in this short video, along with some of my own old family photos.

should we book an engagement session?

TWO OPTIONS- MINI OR FULL

A mini session is for you if….

You’re looking for a little practice before the big day. It’s a chance to get the “getting your photo taken” jitters out, meet me in person, and wear something less formal than your wedding attire. Dogs welcome!

These sessions are at my sunny home studio in Baltimore County, are about 30 minutes long, and emulate about as much time as we’ll spend together taking portraits at your wedding. I shoot exclusively film during these sessions.

A full session is for you if…

You’re looking for something with an adventurous vibe. An after-dark french fry date, your favorite hiking spot, or even your couch.

These sessions are 1 hour long and leave plenty of time for changing between two outfits and/or traveling between two nearby locations for a different look. I shoot exclusively film during these sessions. If the location you’re hoping for is outside of my travel range for engagement sessions, a travel fee may be added.

Of all the vendors you carefully curate to make your day special, you’ll spend the most time with your photographer when your wedding arrives. I’m eager to learn about your relationship, family dynamics, and unique priorities for this celebration.

Q & A

How long have you been photographing weddings? Are you comfortable giving direction?

I photographed my first wedding in 2012, and have since worked with dozens and dozens of couples. I love that no two weddings are alike! I’ve learned to “read the room” and provide guidance where necessary, particularly during group portraits. During couples’ portraits, I prefer to get you walking and talking so you feel natural and at ease in front of the camera. I steer away from poses and have tricks up my sleeve if you need a little hand-holding to feel comfortable.

Should we do an engagement session?

This is likely the first time you’re being professionally photographed, so why let those nerves build up until your actual wedding day? Engagement sessions are such a great way to break the ice AND come away with more casual photos. Many of my couples use them for guest books and/or save the dates. That said, if it’s not a priority for you, that’s ok! We’ll still make amazing photos on your wedding day.

What equipment do you use? Are you insured?

I always bring along two full-frame Nikon camera bodies and an assortment of prime and zoom lenses for different scenarios. One of them serves as my emergency backup. My bag includes a treasure trove of 20th-century film cameras and I love playing with an assortment of film stocks from Kodak to Fuji to Cinestill to Ilford. I use on-camera flash and either bounce light or play with classic direct flash. And yes - I’m absolutely insured!

When will we receive our photos? Will we get sneak peeks?

I don’t provide sneak peeks because the joy of first seeing your photos includes seeing the film and that takes time to mail, develop, and process. In an age of instant digital gratification, waiting can be refreshing. By the time film comes back I’m able to wrap the entire gallery up pretty quickly. I can deliver your entire photo collection- film and digital- within 6 weeks but sometimes 3-4 weeks. I always strive to underpromise and overdeliver, so depending on how busy the season is, you can hope to see your photos sooner!

Can we add a second photographer to our package?

Absolutely! I only hire experienced photographers who understand the dance of a wedding day, have similar creative values, and are competent in both film and digital. I pay them a flat rate of $1000, knowing they have chosen to spend the day as my assistant as opposed to booking their own wedding. I charge my couples $1500 to add a second photographer so I can pay them well and the remaining $500 covers extra film expenses or extra time editing digital photos. (You can choose what medium you’d like them to focus on.) I love working with another artist during your wedding day, but if it’s not in your budget, I’m more than capable of documenting a full day on my own. During our initial call, I like to get a feel for the flow of your day and if I believe a second photographer is truly necessary, I will be honest with you. Usually, that’s only the case if your guest count is over 250, if you would like getting ready coverage in two different locations and timeline doesn’t permit me from visiting both, or if your entire cocktail hour is completely dedicated towards family and wedding portraits (rare) and you would like coverage of both. On that note, I always try to help design a timeline that allows you to actually enjoy the party you planned as opposed to being sequestered away, making portraits most of the time. Your guests deserve your presence and you deserve to have fun!
