“I’M NEVER IN PHOTOS WITH MY FAMILY BECAUSE I’M THE ONE TAKING THEM.”

SOUND FAMILIAR? LET’S CHANGE THAT!

I work with a variety of 35mm and medium format cameras from the 1960s to the 1990s. The process of using film to photograph families slows things down and makes each image precious and meaningful. There’s true chemistry involved in light hitting the film and freezing a singular moment of time as opposed to rattling off hundreds of photos on a digital camera. Film never goes out of style and lends itself to a softer, more emotional experience that reminds us of photos from generations past. With smartphones and digital cameras being so prevalent, kids find the process of loading film and the mystery of waiting for rolls to be developed and processed completely magical. My session with your family is about having an interactive experience that your children will never forget and making art that you and your children will value for generations.

My most authentic work happens when you're comfortable, and what's more comfortable than being at home? Let's spend some time getting to know each other and dive into something your family really does together- snuggle, make pancakes, play in the backyard, walk to the park, paint, fold laundry (or jump in it), have a tickle fight, catch frogs, run through the sprinkler, kiss bruises and wipe away tears, eat ice cream cones, and get messy. I'm not a "prim and proper" sort of person and most likely you're not either. Let's get real and document your normal. And hey! If you're more interested in meeting at a scenic outdoor location to let your wildlings run free, I have a whole list of hidden gems in the Baltimore region. Lakes to forest, field to farm.

Before we create your photos, we’ll discuss the nuances of 35mm and medium format so you can decide which is right for you. We can also talk about color vs. black and white film stocks if you have a strong preference. Each session comes with something tangible to hold and frame for years to come, from classic 4x6” prints or an archival-quality 10x10” leather-bound album. “Simple Sessions” (below) are in Baltimore County on select dates/times. Travel fees may apply to any session if the location is outside Baltimore City or County.

Starting in 2023, family sessions will be 100% film experiences!

Film is nostalgic, timeless, and full of soul. In a world where we have expectations of immediate gratification and perfection, film brings us back to what’s really important about photography- slowing time down and appreciating human connection.

“You took such tiny moments and spots and feelings and colors and made them so magical.

The biggest feeling I felt when looking at them was just gratitude. Not in a hashtag blessed kind of way, but just grateful that this little boy hanging up dyed hankies and that landline on the mountain and messy little corner work space are part of MY life. It seems incredible, really, when you start to stack up the years and the choices and the people and the days and all of it just seems to fit and feel very right. Thank you for that feeling.”
